Science fiction at its finest tells a richly human story from a uniquely informed point of view. The science in sci-fi must be good science--the sounder the better-- though it doesn't have to be "hard science;" the fictional dimension allows for speculation and even visionary flights of imagination (think of the best stories of Robert Heinlein, for example). But no amount of fancy "tech" can ever substitute for the story itself, the tale that illuminates and enlivens our present human condition. A. C. Ellis is a contemporary sci-fi craftsman who "gets it."Ellis clearly respects his readers' intelligence, as the three tantalizingly short stories in this mini-collection demonstrate.
The stories are brief, but finely crafted, like quickly drawn miniatures in an artist's sketchbook. The writing is spare, economical, and highly evocative. Descriptions are vivid, conjuring a rich sense of atmosphere from a few well-chosen words, allowing readers to fill out much of the detail with their own imaginations.
"Lucky" gives us a moving, freak's-eye view of a bleak dystopian future.
"The Chanter" is an intriguing speculation about the human search for meaning in a world that has traded original thought and imagination for immortality. This is the longest of the three stories.
"Fire in the Sky" is an evocation of angst in uncertain times that seem disturbingly like our own.
Some readers may find the endings too abrupt and, especially in the case of the third story, too open-ended. This is a small quibble, though, especially as the atmosphere of these worlds seems to remain in our thoughts, like ghost images lingering on the screen of an e-reader long after it has been turned off.
Recommended as an introduction to the work of a talented, promising author who needs to be better known.
